பெண்ணே நீ விழித்திடு - உன் பேதமை எல்லாம் தவிர்த்திடு கண்ணில் ஒளி வைத்திடு - நல்ல கல்வி கற்று வளர்ந்திடு ஆணுக்கு நிகரானவள் நீ - அந்த அறிவில் அழகில் சிறந்தவள் நீ பூணும் தொழில் ஆற்றலில் - நீ புவியில் யாருக்கும் குறையில்லை சங்கிலிகள் போட்டவர்கள் - உன்னைச் சாதி மதத்தில் சிறைவைத்தார் தங்கச் சிறகை விரித்திடு - நீ தரணி எங்கும் பறந்திடு

Pennē nee vizhiththidu - un Pēdhamai ellaam thavirththidu Kannil oli vaiththidu - nalla Kalvi katru valarndhidu Aanukku nigaraanavall nee - andha Arivil azhagil sirandhavall nee Poonum thozhil aatrallil - nee Puviyil yaarukkum kuraiyillai Sangiligal pottavargal - unnai Saadhi madhaththil siraivaiththaar Thangach siragaai viriththidu - nee Tharani engum parandhidu
English Translation
O woman, awaken - leave All your ignorance behind Put light in your eyes - get Education and grow You are equal to man - in Wisdom and beauty you excel In work and capability - you Are inferior to none on earth Those who chained you - imprisoned You in caste and religion Spread your golden wings - fly Everywhere across the world
Historical Context
Bharathidasan was a pioneer in Tamil literature for women's rights. Influenced by Periyar's Self-Respect Movement, he wrote extensively about women's education, equality, and freedom from social constraints. This poem is a powerful call for women's liberation that was revolutionary for its time.
